Mycorrhiza-like associations in ‘Bryophytes’

Three divisions of non-vascular green plants, the liverworts (Hepatophyta), the hornworts (Anthocerophyta), and the mosses (Bryophyta), are often referred to by the general term "Bryophytes". The gametophyte (haploid) generation is the dominant and photosynthetic phase in all of these plants. Of these divisions, only the mosses appear to lack associations with mycorrhizal fungi.

The liverworts, sometimes referred to as hepatics, consist of approximately 6000 species. These can be subdivided into two general morphological categories - thallose liverworts and leafy liverworts.
